On the evening of August 26, 2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Fayetteville police responded to reports of a shooting in the 100 block of Bonanza Drive. Upon arrival, officers discovered two men with gunshot wounds in an open field. One of the victims, identified as 24-year-old Ernest Bullock, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other individual sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Investigations revealed that the incident began with a disturbance in the 6000 block of Morganton Road, where shots were fired into a vehicle occupied by Bullock and his companion. After being attacked, both men exited the vehicle and fled on foot across an open field, ultimately collapsing where police found them.

Surveillance footage played a crucial role in identifying the suspects. Cameras captured a Kia SUV, owned by 22-year-old Jordan Bernal, traveling from the Red Roof Inn on Owen Drive to the location of the shooting. The footage showed Bernal, along with 28-year-old Justin Shumpert and a third individual, in the vehicle shortly before the incident. The same vehicle was later seen fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting.

On September 22, 2023, authorities arrested Bernal, Shumpert, and 24-year-old Montez Lofton in connection with Bullock's death. All three were charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a weapon into occupied property, and felony conspiracy. They were subsequently held without bail in the Cumberland County jail.

The arrests brought some measure of closure to the community, which had been shaken by the violence. Fayetteville Police Chief Kemberle Braden emphasized the importance of community cooperation in preventing such incidents, stating that addressing the cycle of violence requires a collective effort.
