On September 9, 2023, at approximately 6:30 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 900 block of Moretz Avenue, located in the Druid Hills South neighborhood of north Charlotte. Upon arrival, officers discovered 46-year-old Leon Miller Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound near the Faith Liberation Community Christian Church. Tragically, Mr. Miller was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel.
Following the incident, CMPD's Homicide Unit initiated a comprehensive investigation, which included processing the crime scene, collecting physical evidence, and interviewing potential witnesses. Despite the initial lack of immediate leads, detectives continued to pursue the case diligently. On December 8, 2023, their efforts culminated in the identification and arrest of 41-year-old Corey Baker. Baker was located by CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) and subsequently interviewed by homicide detectives. After the interview, he was charged with murder, attempted armed robbery, and accessory after the fact, and was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
The arrest of Corey Baker brought a significant development to the case, providing a measure of closure to Mr. Miller's family, who were promptly notified of the arrest.
