On October 8, 2023, at approximately 4:52 a.m., Winston-Salem police officers responded to a reported shooting in the 3800 block of North Glenn Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered 34-year-old Calvin Lavar Cunningham suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by police and EMS personnel, Cunningham succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Later that same day, 37-year-old Kevin Levon Holman Jr.
was arrested by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in Charlotte, North Carolina. Initially charged with felony possession of a firearm by a felon, Holman was subsequently charged with felony murder in connection with Cunningham's death. He is currently being held at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center without bond.
This incident marked the 38th homicide in Winston-Salem for the year 2023, a notable increase compared to 26 homicides during the same period in 2022. The investigation into Cunningham's death remains active, and authorities have urged anyone with additional information to contact the Winston-Salem Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
A funeral service for Cunningham was held on October 14, 2023, at Red Bank Missionary Baptist Church, where family and friends gathered to mourn his unexpected passing.
