On November 2, 2023, 28-year-old DeVaughn Deandre Bryant was fatally shot at the Trent Court Housing Complex in New Bern, North Carolina. Officers responded to a shots-fired call near the P Building on Fleet Street at approximately 3:48 p.m., discovering Bryant on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. He was transported to CarolinaEast Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, causing residents to scatter in fear.
One individual, who was driving through the community at the time, heard the shots and attempted to assist Bryant with a medical kit. Despite these efforts, Bryant did not survive. The New Bern Police Department initiated a homicide investigation, stating that, based on early assessments, there was no immediate threat to the public.
In the months following the incident, Bryant's mother, Charmeko, expressed her frustration and grief over the lack of progress in identifying her son's killer. She revealed that Bryant, a 2014 graduate of New Bern High School, was dedicated to his job in logistics and had a passion for motorcycles. He was also a father to two young children, a six-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son, who continue to grapple with the loss of their father.
As of March 2024, no arrests had been made in connection with Bryant's murder. The Craven County Crime Stoppers offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the individual responsible. The New Bern Police Department sought the public's assistance in identifying a person of interest captured in surveillance footage, described as wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt and dark pants. Despite these efforts, the case remained unsolved, leaving Bryant's family and the community awaiting justice.
