On November 18, 2023, at approximately 11:00 a.m., the Iredell County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call reporting a fatal shooting near Nance Farm Road, close to Mooresville, North Carolina. Upon arrival, deputies discovered 46-year-old David Shane Nance with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest at what appeared to be a makeshift gun range on private property. Nance was pronounced dead at the scene.
The individual who placed the 911 call, 63-year-old Mooresville resident Herbert Mark Potts, identified himself as the shooter. During an interview with detectives, Potts stated that the shooting occurred following an altercation between himself and Nance. An autopsy conducted on November 20 confirmed that Nance died as a result of two gunshot wounds to the chest.
Subsequently, homicide investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Potts on charges of felony first-degree murder. He was arrested without incident at his residence on November 27 and is currently being held at the Iredell County Detention Center without bond.
Nance, born on August 29, 1977, in Mooresville, was a graduate of South Iredell High School and worked in the maintenance department at Davidson College. He is survived by his father, Freddie Nance; his wife, Traci Hannah Nance; children, Deanna Pettit and Ethan Adkins; grandson, Lex Pettit; sister, Freda Nance; brothers, Chris Nance and Jamey Nance; and his faithful companion, D.O.G. A Celebration of Life was held on December 16 at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.
