On January 14, 2024, in Pink Hill, North Carolina, 3-year-old Clarence Roland Byrd IV tragically lost his life due to an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. at a residence in the 5500 block of Murphy Road. Clarence was immediately transported to UNC Lenoir Health Care in Kinston, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:00 a.m.
The Lenoir County Sheriff's Office promptly initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Evidence from the scene was collected and sent to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) lab for analysis. Sheriff Jackie Rogers expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, "This is obviously a horrible and tragic situation, and our heart goes out to the family and Pink Hill community. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to all involved."
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Clarence's death. The Lenoir County Sheriff's Office has indicated that, pending the results of the SBI lab analysis, they will consult with the District Attorney's office to determine whether any criminal charges are warranted.
Clarence was born on April 18, 2020, to parents Clarence "Trey" Roland Byrd III and Logan Murphy of Pink Hill. He was described as a loving, smart, funny, energetic, and talkative child who recently embraced the role of "Big Brother" to his sibling, Theodore. Clarence had a fondness for Spider-Man and enjoyed watching "Paw Patrol" while sitting on his blanket in the living room. He was affectionately known as his parents' little shadow, always close by their side.
The community has been deeply affected by this tragic loss, with many extending their condolences and support to the Byrd family during this difficult time. Funeral services were held at Pink Hill Funeral Home on January 20, 2024, officiated by Rev. Milton Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorials were suggested for Clarence's brother, Theodore, or to the Pink Hill Funeral Home.
