On January 21, 2024, at approximately 12:17 a.m., Hickory Police Department officers responded to a reported shooting at the Barklay Falls Apartments on 4th Avenue SE in Hickory, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 49-year-old Howard Lesley Redmon of Granite Falls suffering from a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
As of January 22, 2024, the investigation was ongoing, with no charges filed.

By February 26, 2024, the Hickory Police Department continued to investigate the homicide, with no additional information released and no suspects identified. The department reiterated its request for public assistance in providing any information related to the case.
In addition to the investigation, an obituary for Mr. Redmon was published, noting his birth on September 8, 1974, in Alexander County Hospital. He was a member of Corinth Reformed Church in Hickory and is survived by his parents, grandmother, children, siblings, and numerous other relatives. A funeral service was scheduled for January 31, 2024, at Adams Funeral Home Chapel.
As of December 24, 2024, there have been no public updates regarding arrests or identification of suspects in connection with Mr. Redmon's death. The case remains unsolved, and the Hickory Police Department continues to seek information from the public to aid in their investigation.
