On the evening of February 29, 2024, at approximately 8:43 p.m., Gastonia Police responded to a reported shooting at a residence on South Weldon Street in Gastonia, North Carolina. Upon arrival, officers discovered 53-year-old Gerald Lee Humphries Sr. deceased from a gunshot wound.
Investigations revealed that Humphries had been involved in a domestic dispute with his daughter's boyfriend, 30-year-old Darnell Shanquavius Fowler.
Both men were armed during the altercation, which escalated, resulting in Humphries being fatally shot. It was noted that both individuals resided at the same address where the incident occurred.
Following the incident, Fowler was arrested and charged with a firearms violation, specifically for possessing a stolen firearm. He was booked into the Gaston County Jail. The case was subsequently reviewed by the Gaston County District Attorney’s Office and remained under investigation in the days following the shooting.
In addition to the events surrounding his death, records indicate that Humphries had a prior arrest on January 18, 2023, for assault by strangulation.
