On March 2, 2024, at approximately 10:15 p.m., Greensboro police responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment on the 300 block of O'Connor Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 67-year-old James "Chuck" Willis Chesnutt Jr. deceased from gunshot wounds.
Chesnutt, affectionately known as "Chubby," was born on March 15, 1956, in Randolph County, North Carolina. He was a talented musician, performing in a reggae band, and a passionate fan of Parliament Funkadelic.
An avid sports enthusiast, he also participated in the Million Man March in Washington, D.C., reflecting his commitment to social justice. He is survived by his daughter, Hannah Maria Manuel, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and numerous extended family members and friends.
As of now, the Greensboro Police Department has not released information regarding any arrests or identified suspects in connection with Chesnutt's death. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.
Chesnutt's passing marks the eighth homicide in Greensboro for the year 2024. His death has left a void in the community, with family and friends mourning the loss of a man remembered for his infectious laughter, unwavering kindness, and zest for life.
