On March 2, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Rocky Mount Police Department officers responded to reports of a traffic accident in the 600 block of North Wesleyan Boulevard in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 19-year-old Dcorius Kenaz Omari Wilkins suffering from a gunshot wound sustained during the crash. Wilkins was immediately transported to ECU Medical Center for treatment; however, he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Investigations revealed that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted and accidental, occurring concurrently with the vehicular accident. Authorities have not disclosed specific details regarding the sequence of events leading to the discharge of the firearm. No other individuals were reported injured, and no suspects are being sought in connection with this incident.
Dcorius, affectionately known as "D'cor," was born on June 24, 2004. He was remembered by family and friends for his vibrant personality and the joy he brought to those around him. A visitation was held on March 10, 2024, at Greater New Testament Holy Church in Sharpsburg, followed by a celebration of life on March 11, 2024, at Greater Joy Baptist Church. Interment took place at the Gardens of Gethsemane.
The tragic and accidental nature of Wilkins' death has prompted discussions within the community about firearm safety and the importance of responsible gun ownership. Local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and urge individuals to exercise caution when handling firearms to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
