On March 4, 2024, at approximately 5 a.m., 36-year-old Cynthia Danielle Allen was found deceased in her home on Bavarian Lane in Wilmington, North Carolina. She had suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Her 14-year-old son was present in the home at the time of the incident.
Authorities quickly identified 31-year-old Darius Tyshaun Williams as a person of interest in the case.
Williams had a history of domestic violence-related charges, including felony stalking, felony breaking and entering, and violations of domestic violence protective orders. At the time of Allen's death, he had active warrants for his arrest on these charges.
Court records revealed that Allen had previously sought protection from Williams. In May 2023, she filed for a domestic violence protective order (DVPO) against him but requested its dismissal shortly thereafter. She filed another DVPO in February 2024, alleging that Williams had threatened to kill her and her son, even while he was incarcerated on assault charges. This order was granted, mandating Williams to stay away from Allen's residence and refrain from any form of harassment.
Despite these legal measures, Williams allegedly broke into Allen's home through a window and fatally shot her while her son was asleep. The son awoke to the sound of gunfire and discovered his mother deceased, a traumatic experience that will have lasting impacts.
The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office launched an intensive search for Williams, considering him armed and dangerous. Community members expressed their grief and frustration, noting that the system had failed to protect Allen despite her efforts to seek legal protection. A GoFundMe campaign was established to cover funeral expenses and support her son, highlighting the community's desire for justice and systemic change.
