Hoggard High School, where she was known for her intelligence and commitment to maintaining good grades. She had a passion for dancing, hairstyling, and creating TikTok videos, bringing joy and laughter to her friends with her playful and goofy nature. Her radiant smile could light up any room she entered.
Beyond her vibrant personality, Maykayla was a devoted mother to her young daughter, Kanyri, cherishing the time they spent together and being actively involved in her child's life.
In the aftermath of her death, a 16-year-old male, who was reportedly Maykayla's boyfriend and the father of her child, was arrested and charged in connection with her passing. He faced charges of second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a minor. During the investigation, the accused provided inconsistent accounts to the police, initially claiming that Maykayla had shot herself while he was playing video games. However, evidence suggested otherwise, including blood indicating she had been shot in the front of the house and then moved to the back. The firearm used was found discarded in a nearby yard. Additionally, a Ring security camera captured the accused telling an acquaintance that Maykayla had shot herself, a statement met with skepticism. A 14-year-old witness also reported seeing the accused with a gun, which he allegedly pointed at both her and Maykayla while it was loaded.
The accused appeared in juvenile court, where discussions were held about transferring his case to superior court to be tried as an adult. Concerns were raised about his mental health, with his defense attorney noting that he suffered from extreme anxiety and depression, for which he had been prescribed medication. The court set a secured bond with the condition that, if released, he would be placed under house arrest with electronic monitoring.
