Catherine Ruth Ballard, a 24-year-old woman from Wilmington, NC, was tragically killed on April 1, 2017, in the parking lot of Independence Mall. The incident occurred around 1:22 p.m. near the front entrance of the mall. According to court records, Catherine Ruth Ballard struggled with a man named Darius Nelson, 26, before being shot by Traneta Campbell, 19.
