On March 6, 2024, at approximately 3:00 a.m., Gaston County Police responded to a domestic disturbance call on Chrisco Lane in South Gastonia, North Carolina. Upon arrival, officers encountered 51-year-old David Pace, who had barricaded himself inside the residence, holding two individuals hostage. As officers approached, Pace fired shots inside the home and at the responding officers.
During the standoff, officers successfully rescued one hostage, who informed them that another person was being held and that a third individual had potentially been shot. The Gaston County Police Emergency Response Team (ERT) intervened, rescuing the second hostage and discovering 32-year-old Erica Fay Welch deceased from gunshot wounds inside the residence.
David Pace was taken into custody without further incident. He was charged with felony murder, kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a felon, and assault by pointing a firearm. Investigations revealed that Pace had a prior criminal record, including previous felony convictions, which prohibited him from legally possessing a firearm.
