On June 10, 2024, 39-year-old Latasha Cureton, a mother of six, was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting at her home on Morgan Street in Gastonia, North Carolina. At approximately 11:55 p.m., while Cureton was asleep in her bedroom, an unknown assailant fired multiple rounds into the residence. Her children and mother were in the living room watching television when the gunfire erupted, initially mistaking the sounds for fireworks. The home sustained significant damage, with estimates of 30 to 40 bullet holes, including 13 in the front door alone.
Cureton's son discovered her after she cried out, "I'm hit." Despite immediate attention, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The family, now grappling with the loss, faces additional hardships. Cureton's mother, Rosalie Hardy, who lives on Social Security, is now responsible for raising her grandchildren. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist with funeral expenses and ongoing support for the children.
As of June 14, 2024, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting. The Gastonia Police Department continues to investigate and urges anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers of Gaston County at 704-861-8000.
Cureton was remembered as a beloved mother, daughter, sister, cousin, niece, and friend, who brought love and light into the lives of those who knew her. At the time of her death, she was planning her wedding, adding another layer of tragedy to the family's loss.
