On April 25, 2024, at approximately 10:30 a.m., 21-year-old William Christopher Murphy was involved in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 840 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Emergency responders transported Murphy to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on April 28.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Murphy had sustained a gunshot wound prior to the crash, prompting authorities to classify his death as a homicide.
Murphy's girlfriend, who was present in the vehicle during the incident, recounted that they were engaged in a casual race with another car—a pastime Murphy enjoyed. She reported that after a brief acceleration, Murphy slowed down and began to raise his window when the other vehicle pulled alongside and fired a shot, leading to the fatal crash.
The Greensboro Police Department is actively seeking information related to this case. They are particularly interested in obtaining dashcam footage or photographs of two vehicles observed speeding westbound on I-40 from the Graham/Burlington area toward Greensboro between 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on April 25. The vehicles in question are described as an older model black Pontiac Grand Prix and a red or burgundy newer model sedan, possibly a Honda with dark-tinted windows. Murphy was driving the black Pontiac Grand Prix at the time of the incident, while the red or burgundy sedan fled the scene after the shooting.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the suspect or suspects remain unidentified. Murphy's family is devastated by the loss and is urging anyone with information to come forward to aid in the investigation.
