On June 2, 2024, at approximately 1:45 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers responded to a reported assault with a deadly weapon in the 100 block of Tom Hunter Road, located in Charlotte's North Tryon Division. Upon arrival, they discovered 39-year-old Pierre McClain suffering from apparent gunshot wounds near a convenience store. Tragically, Mr. McClain was pronounced dead at the scene by MEDIC personnel.
Investigations revealed that Mr.
McClain, employed as a security guard, had attempted to intervene in a physical altercation occurring at the convenience store. During his efforts to de-escalate the situation, he was fatally shot. Surveillance footage from the area showed Mr. McClain earlier confronting individuals reportedly engaging in drug use behind a dumpster, indicating his commitment to maintaining safety and order in the vicinity.
Following a thorough investigation, CMPD detectives identified 31-year-old Durell Sheridan as a suspect in Mr. McClain's murder. On July 23, 2024, the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) apprehended Mr. Sheridan on unrelated outstanding warrants. He was subsequently interviewed by homicide detectives and, based on the evidence gathered, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Mr. McClain's death. Mr. Sheridan was then transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
The arrest brought a measure of relief to Mr. McClain's family, who were promptly notified of the development. CMPD emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing, urging anyone with additional information to contact their Homicide Unit directly or provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
