On July 9, 2024, at approximately 1:00 a.m., 58-year-old Mustaffa Muhammad was fatally shot while driving home from work on Statesville Avenue in Charlotte, North Carolina. A vehicle pulled alongside his car, and the occupants opened fire, resulting in his immediate death at the scene.
This tragic incident was part of a 30-minute shooting spree that terrorized various neighborhoods in Charlotte.
Following Muhammad's murder, the assailants targeted multiple individuals: a cyclist on LaSalle Street, a group on Catherine Simmons Avenue—where a woman inside her apartment was struck—and another cyclist on Hilary Circle. These seemingly random attacks left several injured and the community in fear.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department swiftly initiated an investigation, leading to significant developments by July 11, 2024. A traffic stop on Nations Ford Road resulted in the arrest of a 16-year-old male found with a stolen firearm and shell casings linking him to the shootings. Further investigation, with assistance from the FBI, led to the apprehension of 18-year-old Carlos Roberto Diaz. Both individuals were charged with first-degree murder, multiple counts of attempted murder, and other related offenses.
