On July 12, 2024, at approximately 2:04 p.m., emergency services in Alexander County, North Carolina, received a distress call reporting a house fire and a victim with a gunshot wound at 1036 North Shore Drive in the Oliver’s Landing Development near Hickory. Upon arrival, first responders found that several good Samaritans had noticed smoke emanating from the residence and had bravely entered the burning home to rescue the occupant, identified as 64-year-old Teresa Ann Bowman. Ms.
Bowman was immediately transported to Frye Regional Medical Center by Alexander County EMS. Despite the prompt medical attention, she succumbed to her injuries, which included a single gunshot wound.
A joint investigation conducted by the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office and the Alexander County Fire Marshal’s Office revealed that the fire was deliberately set using materials available within the residence. Evidence indicated that Ms. Bowman had intentionally ignited the fire before inflicting a fatal gunshot wound upon herself. The dwelling was ultimately destroyed by the blaze, despite the efforts of multiple fire departments, including Bethlehem Fire and Rescue, Ellendale Fire Department, Wittenburg Fire Department, Grace Chapel Fire Department, and Hiddenite Fire Department, all of which responded to the scene to extinguish the fire.
Ms. Bowman, affectionately known as "T" or "T-Bird" by her loved ones, was remembered for her vivacious spirit and deep love for animals, often advocating for their care and fair treatment. She is survived by her two sisters, Sandra "San" Bailey and Cynthia Bowman, as well as two nieces, Amanda Ward and Brittany Bailey, along with numerous cousins and friends who held her dear. In lieu of flowers, her family requested that individuals honor her memory by volunteering at animal rescues or offering support to those in need, embodying the kindness and compassion that Ms. Bowman exemplified throughout her life.
Authorities have not reported any arrests or involvement of additional suspects in this tragic incident, as the evidence points to a self-inflicted act by Ms. Bowman. The community mourns her loss and extends heartfelt condolences to her family during this difficult time.
