On July 19, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in Burlington, North Carolina, resulting in the death of 46-year-old Lourdes "Luly" Pagán Vega. Early that morning, around 7:12 a.m., the Alamance County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of gunfire in the 3300 block of Beaver Creek Road. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Lourdes Vega's body at a neighboring residence, where she had fled in an attempt to escape the shooting.
She had sustained fatal gunshot wounds inflicted by her estranged husband, Victor Vega.
Following the shooting, Victor Vega returned to their former marital home on Beaver Creek Road. The Sheriff's Office deployed its Special Response Team and utilized drones to locate him. Tragically, Victor was found deceased in a detached garage on the property, having died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, indicating a murder-suicide. Investigations revealed that the couple had been separated, with Victor residing in an apartment in Burlington during the separation. Authorities had no prior records of domestic disturbances at their residence.
Lourdes Vega was a respected professional, serving as a Director at Fidelity Investments for over two decades. She was known for her pride in her Puerto Rican heritage and her deep love for her family. Her interests included singing, dancing, hiking, reading, and traveling, with a particular fondness for family vacations. She is survived by her three children, her parents, and several siblings. A funeral service was held on August 1, 2024, at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel, followed by her interment at Alamance Memorial Park.
In the wake of this tragedy, the community has been urged to raise awareness about domestic violence and support resources available to those in need. The Alamance County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to this incident and encourages anyone with relevant information to come forward.
