On the morning of July 19, 2024, at approximately 10 a.m., a man suffering from a gunshot wound arrived at Greensboro Fire Station 5, located at 1401 Westover Terrace in Greensboro, North Carolina. He informed emergency personnel that he had been shot at an apartment in the 2200 block of West Cornwallis Drive and that another individual at that location had also been shot. The injured man was transported to a hospital for treatment and subsequently released.
Responding to the information provided, officers from the Greensboro Police Department proceeded to the specified apartment on West Cornwallis Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered 30-year-old Christopher Bennet suffering from life-threatening injuries. Tragically, Bennet was pronounced dead at the scene. His death marked the city's 20th homicide of the year.
In the initial aftermath of the incident, police had no suspect information and appealed to the public for assistance. Subsequent investigations led to a significant development when, on August 2, a 16-year-old male was charged with first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in connection with Bennet's death. The juvenile suspect was taken into custody on August 10 and placed in a juvenile detention center. The victim's family was notified of the arrest.
