On July 26, 2024, at approximately 2:24 a.m., Asheville Police Department officers responded to reports of a gunshot wound at the Hillcrest Apartments on Atkinson Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 31-year-old Denzel McKnight with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was promptly transported to Mission Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
