On the evening of August 4, 2024, at approximately 9:41 p.m., Hoke County Sheriff's deputies responded to a reported shooting at the intersection of Huckabee Street and Phillipi Church Road in Raeford, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 44-year-old Christopher M. Purcell suffering from a gunshot wound. Purcell was promptly transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
In the immediate aftermath, Hoke County detectives, alongside the Special Operations Unit and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident. By August 5, 2024, authorities had identified 47-year-old Cornelius DeShone McDuffie as the primary suspect in Purcell's death. Subsequently, warrants were issued for McDuffie's arrest on charges including First-Degree Murder, Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle, and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. McDuffie was apprehended without incident and taken before a magistrate at the Hoke County Detention Center, where he was held without bond.
Christopher Purcell's passing was deeply mourned by his family and the Raeford community. He is survived by his children, La'Dezia and Kadence Purcell; his parents, Anthony Bernard and Karen Graham Purcell; his brothers, Keith and Justin Purcell; and two grandchildren, along with numerous other family members and friends. A Celebration of Life was held on August 16, 2024, at the Cape Fear Conference B Headquarters, followed by a committal service at the Graham Family Cemetery.
