On October 3, 2024, at approximately 3:40 p.m., 20-year-old Taeshawn Nasir Gunter of Pinetops, North Carolina, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Speedway convenience store located at the intersection of NC Highway 43 and MacGregor Downs Road, just north of Greenville. Upon arrival, deputies from the Pitt County Sheriff's Office found Gunter suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was promptly transported to ECU Health Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Law enforcement officials have indicated that they have interviewed the individual believed to be responsible for the shooting, along with all available witnesses. The incident is considered isolated, and authorities have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public. The findings of the investigation are expected to be forwarded to the District Attorney's Office to determine whether to pursue prosecution.

Gunter is survived by his parents, Derrick Harper and Deidria Williams Jones, his stepfather Victor Jones, his daughter Laviyah Cox, and several siblings. The community mourns his untimely passing and extends condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.
