On October 3, 2024, at approximately 3:40 p.m., 20-year-old Taeshawn Nasir Gunter of Pinetops, North Carolina, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Speedway convenience store located at the intersection of NC Highway 43 and MacGregor Downs Road, just north of Greenville. Upon arrival, deputies from the Pitt County Sheriff's Office found Gunter suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was promptly transported to ECU Health Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
