On October 3, 2024, at approximately 12:34 a.m., Asheville Police Department officers responded to a report of a shooting on Laurel Loop in West Asheville. Upon arrival, they discovered 26-year-old JaQuan Devaughen Patrick Bowen with a gunshot wound to the head. Officers immediately administered life-saving measures, and Bowen was transported to Mission Hospital. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on October 4, 2024.
At the scene, police arrested 40-year-old Jessica Barnes Ferland in connection with the shooting. Initially charged with attempted first-degree murder, Ferland's charges were upgraded to first-degree murder following Bowen's death. She is currently held in the Buncombe County Detention Facility without bond. Authorities have not disclosed the nature of the relationship between Bowen and Ferland or the motive behind the shooting.
This incident marked the 10th homicide investigated by the Asheville Police Department in 2024.
