On October 26, 2024, at approximately 10:12 p.m., Fayetteville Police Department officers responded to a reported shooting in the 2000 block of Cowan Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 37-year-old Jonathan Eastman suffering from gunshot wounds. He was promptly transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Jonathan Eastman was born on September 27, 1987, to Rick and Holly Eastman.
He spent most of his life in Clayton, North Carolina, before relocating to Fayetteville in recent years. Known for his compassionate spirit and dedication to helping others, Jonathan's greatest joy was his son, Aiden. He is survived by Aiden, his parents, his brother Brian Eastman, and his niece Chloe Eastman. A visitation and memorial service were held on November 2, 2024, at Reeves Funeral Home in Hope Mills, North Carolina.
Following an investigation, on November 19, 2024, Fayetteville Police arrested 26-year-old Devante Kendrick Greenway in connection with Eastman's death. Greenway was charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping. According to court records, Greenway allegedly kidnapped Eastman with the intent to terrorize him before the fatal shooting. He was booked into the Cumberland County jail.
The Fayetteville Police Department continues to encourage anyone with information regarding this case to come forward. Fayetteville/Cumberland County Crimestoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest. Individuals with information are urged to contact Detective A.
