In the early evening chill of January 27, 2023, the life of 29-year-old Earl Thomas, a Black male from Rochester, New York, was tragically cut short. The setting was a Sunoco gas station on Culver Road, a place of routine comings and goings that was about to become the scene of a fatal altercation. Around 8:30 p.m., an argument escalated, and the sharp retort of gunfire pierced the night air. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered evidence of a shooting but no victim.
Thomas had already been transported to Rochester General Hospital in a private vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Despite the urgent efforts of medical staff, his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the city's sixth homicide of the year moved swiftly. Authorities identified 23-year-old Robert Broomfield as the individual who allegedly shot Thomas during their dispute. Investigators asserted that Broomfield was in illegal possession of a handgun at the time of the incident. His arrest brought a suspect into custody, but it did little to quell the grief of a family suddenly without a son, a father to six children, and a brother to ten siblings. Robert Broomfield was subsequently arrested and faced charges of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. During his arraignment in Rochester City Court, he entered a plea of not guilty to the charges brought against him and was remanded to the Monroe County Jail to await further court proceedings.
