On a cold February day in Niagara Falls, New York, the life of 16-year-old Elijah A. Lopez was tragically cut short. The male teenager was fatally shot on Monday, February 20, 2023, in the Jordan Gardens apartment complex. At the time of his death, Elijah was a junior in high school and had been looking forward to wrestling in his senior year. He was known by loved ones as being smart, funny, and loyal.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of 22-year-old Gabriel Behrens of Niagara Falls. In a turn of events that brought some measure of closure to the victim's family, Behrens pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the first degree for his role in Elijah's death. This plea was part of a larger admission of guilt that included other offenses committed in the area.
In addition to the manslaughter charge, Behrens also pleaded guilty to attempted robbery in the first degree for an armed robbery that occurred in an alley off Niagara Street in the same month as the shooting. Furthermore, he admitted to a charge of attempted criminal possession of a weapon stemming from an incident in June of 2022. For his crimes, Gabriel Behrens was sentenced to a total of 32 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision.
