In the early morning hours of a July day in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragic and fatal encounter for 38-year-old Jasmin Figueroa. The female victim found herself at the center of a volatile love triangle that ultimately cost her her life. The events unfolded outside of her Greene Avenue apartment building, shattering the quiet of the pre-dawn hours.
Figueroa was with her new partner, a 44-year-old man, when they were confronted
by her ex-boyfriend, a 50-year-old man with whom she shared children. The confrontation quickly turned violent as the ex-boyfriend, armed with a 9mm handgun, opened fire. He first shot the 44-year-old man in the abdomen and leg. Moments later, following a heated argument with Figueroa, he shot her in the head and leg.
After shooting Figueroa and her new boyfriend, the 50-year-old gunman turned the weapon on himself, taking his own life at the scene. When emergency services arrived, they found the shooter unconscious and unresponsive on the roadway with the firearm beside him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Both Figueroa and her injured boyfriend were rushed to NYC Health & Hospitals/Kings County. While the male victim was in stable condition and survived his injuries, Figueroa was in critical condition and ultimately succumbed to her wounds later that day. The incident was investigated as a murder-suicide, and as the sole suspect died at the scene, no arrests were made.
