The young man, a Black / African American male, was found deceased in a fourth-floor apartment on Fteley Avenue in what investigators have described as an apparent murder-suicide.
Authorities believe that Martinez's father shot his son before turning the gun on himself.
Relatives indicated the father had been experiencing mental health problems. The grim discovery was made after Martinez, who was a member of a police baseball team, failed to show up for a game, prompting a concerned friend from his division to check on him. When the friend arrived at the apartment, he found the tragic scene.
Martinez had been with the NYPD since 2018 and was working in the Bronx narcotics division at the time of his death. He was remembered by friends and colleagues as a hardworking and dedicated officer who had dreamed of being a cop since he was a child.
