On the evening of October 5, 2023, a tragic event unfolded in the Charlotte Gardens neighborhood of the Bronx. Anwar Stokes, a 47-year-old Black male, was fatally shot at approximately 8:29 p.m. near 985 East 174th Street. The New York Police Department's 42nd Precinct responded to a 911 call and discovered Stokes with multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
