In the early hours of a November morning in Albany, New York, a life was tragically cut short. Elijah Thompson, a 32-year-old Black man, was found with a gunshot wound to his chest near the intersection of Judson Street and First Street. The incident occurred at approximately 3 a.m. on November 11, 2023. Emergency responders quickly transported him to Albany Medical Center, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The Albany Police Department launched an investigation into the
homicide. In the initial stages, they had not identified any suspects or a motive for the shooting. However, their persistence paid off, and on December 6, 2023, an arrest was made. Dario Lewis, also 32 years old, was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and multiple counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Prosecutors stated that Lewis had intentionally shot Thompson in the chest with the intent to kill him.
The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of closure to the case. On May 3, 2024, Dario Lewis pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter in Albany County Supreme Court. In his plea, Lewis admitted that he had intended to cause serious physical injury to Thompson, which ultimately led to his death. The plea agreement also acknowledged that Lewis was in possession of an illegal and loaded firearm on the day of the shooting and on a subsequent date in November.
On July 25, 2024, Dario Lewis was sentenced for his role in Elijah Thompson's death. He received a sentence of 25 years in state prison, which will be followed by five years of post-release supervision. During the sentencing, the judge underscored the immense gravity of taking another person's life and expressed a hope that Lewis would use his time in prison to reflect on the profound pain he had inflicted upon Thompson's family.
