On a Friday night in Bay Shore, New York, a gathering of approximately 50 young people at an outdoor party on Ackerson Boulevard turned into a scene of violence and tragedy. It was on March 22, 2024, that 19-year-old Sean Mills, a Black male, was shot and killed. The incident, which occurred at around 9 p.m., also resulted in a 17-year-old girl being wounded.
Sean Mills, a recent graduate of Brentwood High School, was remembered by his family as a good kid who enjoyed boxing.
His brother indicated that Mills knew how to defend himself, suggesting that the shooting was a cowardly act. The family also revealed that he had been receiving threats on Instagram from former classmates prior to the incident, with some posts reportedly showing guns. A flyer for the party had advertised that there would be security and a prohibition on weapons.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, both victims were transported to a local hospital. Mills was pronounced dead from his injuries, while the teenage girl was treated for non-life-threatening wounds. The tragedy was compounded for the Mills family when they discovered that a video of Sean bleeding on the floor while medics tried to save him had been posted on Instagram by someone at the party. His mother also saw a threatening post made before the party that said her son would be 'smoked.'
As of late March 2024, the Suffolk County Police Department's investigation into the homicide was ongoing, and they have not made any arrests or publicly identified any suspects. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact the Suffolk County Homicide Squad or Crime Stoppers. The incident was part of a concerning 24-hour period of violence in the area that saw three teenagers shot, raising community concerns about safety.
