In the quiet community of Baywood, a grim discovery was made on a Sunday morning in June of 2020. The body of 36-year-old Wayne Cherry of Brentwood was found in the backyard of an unoccupied house on Udall Road. Authorities reported that Cherry had sustained a wound to his head, and his death was quickly determined to be criminal in nature.

A federal indictment was unsealed, charging Dwayne Murray, an alleged member of the Bloods street gang, with the murder of Wayne Cherry. The indictment presented a harrowing account of the events that transpired on the evening of June 12, 2020, two days before Cherry's body was discovered.
According to the charges, Murray fatally shot Wayne Cherry in the head in the very same backyard where he would later be found. Murray was charged with a number of offenses in the 32-count superseding indictment, including racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, and various firearms and narcotics-related offenses, in addition to the murder charge. The case is part of a larger joint federal and state investigation aimed at dismantling the violent activities of the Bloods gang on Long Island. At the time of the indictment, Murray was already in custody and was awaiting arraignment on the new charges.
