In a tragic turn of events on a Saturday afternoon, Abu Yousuf, a 39-year-old male of Bangladeshi descent, was killed in Buffalo, New York. On April 27, 2024, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Yousuf and his colleague, 59-year-old Babul Meah, arrived at a residence on Zenner Street to perform repairs. The two men, working as handymen, were preparing the vacant house for a new owner, unaware that it was illegally occupied.
As they attempted to enter the property to carry out their work, they were met with unexpected and fatal violence.
A squatter, later identified as 32-year-old Dale O. Cummings, was unlawfully residing in the upper apartment of the home. Without provocation, Cummings opened fire on the two unsuspecting workers with an illegal rifle, shooting them multiple times. The attack was sudden and brutal. When Buffalo Police responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired, they discovered a grim scene. Yousuf was found deceased on the porch of the house, while Meah was found shot in the street. Meah was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Initial investigations at the scene led to a tense standoff, as police believed the gunman had barricaded himself inside the residence. For nearly six hours, law enforcement, including SWAT teams, surrounded the house after witnesses reported seeing the shooter run back inside. However, surveillance footage later revealed that the suspect had fled out the back of the house before police had established a perimeter. The following day, on the evening of Sunday, April 28, 2024, Buffalo Police located a man matching the suspect's description in the area of East Delavan and Norfolk Avenues. This man was identified as Dale O. Cummings. A search of a backpack he was carrying revealed a loaded rifle with a high-capacity magazine.
Forensic analysis confirmed that the rifle found in Cummings' possession was the weapon used in the killings of both Abu Yousuf and Babul Meah. Furthermore, DNA evidence on the rifle was a strong match to Cummings. Following his arrest, Cummings faced trial for the murders. After approximately two hours of deliberation, a jury found him guilty of Murder in the First Degree, as well as two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon. Dale O. Cummings now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
