In the winter of 2015, the life of 19-year-old Jaquan Sullivan was cut tragically short on a street in Buffalo, New York. On the evening of December 5th, Sullivan was shot on the 300 block of Parkdale Avenue. He was rushed to Buffalo General Hospital, but the injuries he sustained proved to be fatal, and he died later that evening. Sullivan was a male who had attended Health Sciences Charter School and worked at Mr.
Smoothie in the Galleria Mall.
The investigation into his death unfolded over several years, marked by complexities and falsehoods. Early in the investigation, a man named Davon Lowry provided Buffalo Police Homicide detectives with two written statements just days after the shooting, on December 8, 2015. In these statements, he offered details about the shooting and identified a supposed shooter. However, his story would prove to be inconsistent. In February 2016, Lowry admitted to detectives that a tip-line message he had sent was untrue. Two years later, in July 2018, when interviewed by the FBI, he provided a different identity for the shooter than he had initially given to local police. When called to testify before a Federal Grand Jury, Lowry denied his previous statements to both the Buffalo Police and the FBI, leading to his indictment for lying to a grand jury.
Ultimately, the relentless work of law enforcement led to the identification and prosecution of the individual responsible for Jaquan Sullivan's death. Dalvon Curry, a member of the CBL/BFL gang, was charged with the murder. Prosecutors revealed that Sullivan was a rival gang member. In February 2020, a U.S. District Court jury found Dalvon Curry guilty of the murder of Jaquan Sullivan. Curry was also convicted on racketeering and narcotics conspiracy charges, as well as for another murder that occurred in 2017.
