In the early morning hours of July 12, 2024, a dispute at a barbecue in the courtyard of the Albany Houses in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, turned deadly. Dyseem Jackson, a 21-year-old male, was fatally shot just after midnight. The incident began after Jackson reportedly intervened when another man inappropriately touched a woman. This led to an argument that tragically escalated.
Police received a 911 call for an assault in progress at 1400 Bergen Street at 12:18 a.m.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Dyseem Jackson with multiple gunshot wounds to his head. Emergency medical services responded but Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene. Although the shooting is believed to have occurred in the lobby of the building, evidence markers and shell casings were also found on the sidewalk outside. Investigators recovered a firearm at the scene.
A few hours after the shooting, authorities arrested 37-year-old Usamah Sidberry, a fellow resident of the Albany Houses, in connection with the killing. Sidberry was subsequently charged with murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. It was reported that Sidberry had a prior conviction for manslaughter.
During his formal arraignment at the Kings County Supreme Court, Usamah Sidberry pleaded not guilty. The court proceeding was marked by high emotions, which erupted into a physical altercation between the families of Jackson and Sidberry. The confrontation led to Sidberry's sister being taken into custody after she reportedly threw her phone and a bag at Jackson's mother. Sidberry's next court appearance was scheduled for September 6.
