Purvis, a 30-year-old male NYPD officer, was found deceased in his apartment on West 186th Street in the Hudson Heights area. Concern had grown when his patrol partner was unable to reach him, a silence that prompted a visit to his home to ensure his well-being.
Upon arriving, his partner's concern turned to a grim discovery.
Peeking through a window, he saw Purvis lying motionless inside. Officers were called to the scene, and upon entering the apartment, they found him with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Emergency medical services responded but could only pronounce him dead at the scene. The circumstances of his death were determined to be the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and authorities have described it as an apparent suicide. No suspects have been named, and no arrests have been made in connection with his death.
Gregory J. Purvis had been a police officer since 2020 and was assigned to the 30th Precinct in Harlem. His death was mourned by his colleagues, with the NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations acknowledging the loss of a 'brother to the trauma of this work.'. The Bronx chapter of the National Latino Peace Officers Association also extended their condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. In the wake of his passing, a GoFundMe page was established by a fellow officer from the 30th Precinct to offer financial support to his grieving family during a difficult time.
