On a late August evening in Brentwood, New York, a verbal dispute on a residential front lawn escalated into a fatal encounter for Joshua E. Jasmin. On August 30, 2024, the 30-year-old North Babylon man was shot and killed outside a home on Charter Oaks Avenue. Authorities allege that Romeo Campbell, 23, of Brentwood, fired a shotgun twice, striking Jasmin in the torso.
The incident, which occurred around 6 p.m., was reportedly captured on video and audio surveillance from an adjacent property.
Responding Suffolk County Police officers found Jasmin, shirtless and without a pulse, lying partially in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported by ambulance to South Shore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An eyewitness and police body camera footage indicated that Jasmin was unarmed during the confrontation. Investigators who canvassed the property found a shotgun and a shell casing inside the residence and located Campbell nearby. Authorities stated that Campbell and Jasmin were known to each other.
Following the investigation, Romeo Campbell was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. Campbell's attorney claimed that a witness saw Jasmin acting aggressively toward his client and raised issues regarding his client's Miranda rights and the search of the property. Prosecutors, however, stated that Campbell admitted to the shooting. In September 2024, a grand jury indicted Campbell on the second-degree murder charge. A judge ordered him to be held without bail, and he faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
