On the morning of March 27, 2023, violence disrupted the quiet of the Benton Park West neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri. Just before 9:00 a.m., 26-year-old Jalea Marie Loeffelman-Hunter was sitting inside a vehicle parked in an alley behind the 3000 block of Iowa Avenue. She was accompanied by an 18-year-old male when gunfire suddenly erupted, targeting the vehicle and its occupants.
A police officer patrolling the area heard the distinct sound of gunshots and immediately began to
canvas the neighborhood to locate the source. Upon reaching the alleyway, the officer discovered the bullet-riddled vehicle with both victims still inside. Emergency responders arrived shortly after the discovery, but Jalea had sustained fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The male victim, whose identity was not publicly released, had also been struck by gunfire and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Jalea, a resident of Bellefontaine Neighbors, was remembered by those who knew her as a free spirit who cherished her family. Born in St. Louis, she was a mother to a young daughter and had a passion for candle making. She was survived by her parents, daughter, and eight siblings, leaving behind a large circle of grieving relatives and friends who gathered to mourn her passing weeks later at a service in St. Ann.
In the aftermath of the shooting, homicide detectives from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation into the attack. Despite the brazen nature of the morning shooting, no suspects were immediately identified, and details regarding a potential motive remained scarce. Public reports following the incident did not indicate any immediate arrests or charges filed in connection with her death, leaving the case as an open homicide investigation.
