Black / African American male Kayden Dorrell Morton, 23, was fatally shot in Springfield, Missouri, on the evening of June 25, 2023. The incident occurred at a residence located at 902 North Glenn Avenue. Officers from the Springfield Police Department were dispatched to the scene at approximately 5:42 p.m. following reports of a shooting. upon their arrival, first responders discovered Morton suffering from gunshot wounds.
Despite the response of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Morton was a lifelong resident of Springfield and a 2018 graduate of Parkview High School, where he had been recognized for his athleticism on the football field. He was remembered by his former coach as a talented and coachable player who was well-liked by his teammates. Beyond sports, those who knew him described him as a young man with a passion for history and science, as well as a generous spirit. He left behind a loving family, including his parents and siblings, and his death was noted as creating a significant void in the lives of his friends and the local community.
The Springfield Police Department initiated a homicide investigation immediately following the shooting. At the time of the initial reports and subsequent updates, authorities stated that no suspect had been identified in connection with the crime. Detectives continued to canvas for information and appealed to the public to come forward with any tips that could lead to an arrest, but no charges or convictions have been reported in public records regarding this case.
