In the early morning hours of August 1, 2023, Jesse Dewayne Thomas II, a 39-year-old Caucasian male, was inside a home in the 6000 block of Indiana Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, when he was fatally struck by gunfire. Police, who responded to a call about shots being fired shortly after 3 a.m., found Thomas unresponsive inside the residence. Despite the efforts of officers and emergency medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators have characterized the
incident as a drive-by shooting, with the shots originating from outside the house. At the time of the shooting, there were two other adults present in the home with Thomas, neither of whom were injured. His mother, Sharie Preator, believes her son was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. She shared that he had given a friend a ride to that address after they had eaten dinner together. Preator mentioned that her son was trying to rebuild his life after going through a rough patch.
As of late 2024, the case of Jesse Thomas II's death remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The Kansas City Police Department has not released any information about potential suspects or a suspect vehicle. Detectives are still seeking information from the public and have encouraged anyone with knowledge of the crime to contact the Homicide Unit or the TIPS Hotline. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information that is submitted anonymously to the TIPS Hotline.
