In what was supposed to be a celebration of her 33rd birthday, a night out in Kansas City turned into a devastating tragedy for Courtney Wickman. The young mother, who had spent a quiet birthday earlier in the week with her sister, decided to have a more festive outing on Saturday, October 21, 2023. She and her sister, Samantha Wickman, along with a friend, went to a rooftop bar in the Midtown neighborhood.
After about an hour of drinks and laughter with friends, their lives were irrevocably changed.
As Courtney and her group were leaving the establishment at 3835 Main Street just after 10:30 p.m., a series of gunshots rang out from the parking lot. In a senseless act of violence, a stray bullet struck Courtney in the head. First responders found her unresponsive and rushed her to a local hospital with critical injuries. Despite medical efforts, she was declared brain dead and placed on life support. Her family, faced with an unimaginable decision, chose to donate her organs, a final act of generosity from a woman known for her caring nature. A few days after the shooting, Courtney Wickman succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a suspect: 19-year-old Katera R. Mayfield. According to police, Courtney was not the intended target of the gunfire. Witnesses reported that an individual fired multiple shots toward the business as people were exiting. Jackson County prosecutors charged Mayfield with assault. However, before she could be brought to justice for Courtney's death, authorities, with the assistance of the Osage County Sheriff's Office, found Mayfield deceased. Her death was ruled an apparent suicide. The Osage County Sheriff's Office is conducting the investigation into Mayfield's death.
Courtney's death was recorded as the 154th homicide in Kansas City in 2023. Her family, who had previously endured the tragedy of losing another sister in 2018, was left to mourn the loss of a vibrant single mother to a four-year-old daughter. The community and her friends remembered Courtney as a compassionate and supportive person, always there for those in need.
