On the afternoon of October 24, 2023, tragedy struck in the Penrose neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Calvin Kelly, a 20-year-old Black male, was in the 4200 block of Shreve Avenue when he became involved in a heated argument with two other individuals outside a local market. The dispute escalated quickly, and just after 3 p.m., one of the individuals pulled out a firearm. The assailant fired shots, striking Kelly in the head and firing at the second man, who managed to escape unharmed.
Kelly was critically wounded but still alive when first responders arrived; however, after being rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries approximately five hours later.
The victim's mother, Naiesha Stewart, was reportedly nearby when the shooting occurred and rushed to her son's side as he lay on the ground. She later recounted the heartbreaking moments of trying to comfort him while waiting for help. The shooting devastated the family, leaving them to mourn a young life cut short by sudden violence. Police investigators determined that Kelly lived just a few blocks from where the incident took place. Through eyewitness accounts and further investigation, authorities identified a suspect, a teenager named Tabari Freeman, who was sixteen at the time of the offense but would later face the legal system as an adult.
Freeman was initially taken into custody and held at the St. Louis Juvenile Detention Center. However, in early February 2024, he managed to escape the facility by rolling under a security gate in the parking garage. The escape prompted a manhunt, during which his identity was initially withheld from the public due to his juvenile status. He remained at large for several weeks until law enforcement recaptured him on February 27, returning him to custody. Following his recapture, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office certified him as an adult, charging him with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of armed criminal action in connection with Kelly’s death.
