In the early evening of November 18, 2023, a dispute in the parking lot of a Price Cutter grocery store on East St. Louis Street in Springfield, Missouri, ended in the tragic death of 25-year-old Nathan Williams. The young man, a resident of Springfield, was involved in a disturbance with a woman who was armed with a handgun. As the situation escalated, the woman discharged her weapon, striking Williams.
Springfield police officers responded to the scene at 6:24 p.m.
to find Nathan Williams on the ground with a gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel arrived shortly after and transported him to a local hospital. Despite their efforts, Williams succumbed to his injuries a short time later. His family was notified of his passing.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, detectives with the Springfield Police Department began an investigation into what they classified as the city's 18th homicide of the year. The woman involved in the incident was identified and questioned by investigators. At the time of the initial reports, she had not been arrested.
Authorities announced that once their investigation was complete, the findings would be turned over to the Greene County Prosecutor's Office. It would then be up to the prosecutor to review the case and decide if any criminal charges would be filed. The police department encouraged anyone with additional information about the shooting to come forward and contact them or to make an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers. There have been no subsequent public announcements regarding any arrests or the filing of charges in connection with the death of Nathan Williams.
