In the late hours of a Sunday night in March, the city of Springfield, Missouri, was shattered by a string of violence that would leave an indelible mark on the community. Christopher Walsh, a 32-year-old male police officer, responded to a call that would be his last. The evening of March 15, 2020, spiraled into tragedy as a gunman, later identified as 31-year-old Joaquin S. Roman, began a random and terrifying shooting spree across the city.
His violent path culminated in a crash at a Kum & Go gas station and convenience store.
Upon arriving at the chaotic scene, Officer Walsh and another officer, Josiah Overton, were immediately met with gunfire from Roman, who had already opened fire on employees and customers inside the store. In an act of immense bravery, Officer Walsh rushed into the peril to protect the lives of those inside. Both officers were struck by the suspect's bullets. Despite the heroic efforts of his fellow officers to quickly get him to a local hospital, Officer Walsh succumbed to his injuries in the early morning of March 16, 2020. Three other innocent people, a store employee and two customers, were also tragically killed by the gunman inside the convenience store.
The shooter, Joaquin S. Roman, was found deceased inside the store from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. As a result, there were no arrests made in connection with the death of Officer Walsh or the other victims of the rampage. The community mourned the loss of Officer Walsh, who was remembered as a devoted husband, father, and a U.S. Army veteran who had served two tours of duty. He had been with the Springfield Police Department since 2016, continuing a life dedicated to service and the protection of others.
