On the morning of December 20, 2023, authorities in Country Club Hills, a municipality in St. Louis County, Missouri, were alerted to a violent incident in a commercial district. Just after 6:00 a.m., police officers responded to a call regarding a shooting in the 7400 block of West Florissant Avenue. Upon their arrival at the scene, which was identified in reports as a parking lot, they discovered an unresponsive 43-year-old male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
The victim, later identified as Brandon Cotton, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
Homicide detectives from the St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons assumed control of the investigation and uncovered disturbing details about the moments leading up to Cotton's death. Surveillance footage obtained from the area captured the sequence of events, revealing that a suspect had approached Cotton and brandished a firearm. The video showed a physical confrontation ensuing between the two men, during which the assailant shot Cotton multiple times. Investigators observed that after the shooting, the suspect rifled through Cotton’s pockets and removed an item from a bag the victim was carrying. The suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle noted for having distinctive damage. This getaway vehicle was later discovered by law enforcement abandoned and suffering from severe fire damage, suggesting an attempt to destroy evidence.
In the days following the murder, investigators utilized the surveillance evidence and other leads to identify a suspect. On December 24, 2023, it was reported that St. Louis County Police had arrested 30-year-old James Stampley in connection with the homicide. Prosecutors subsequently issued charges against Stampley, including first-degree murder, robbery, and tampering with physical evidence. The authorities revealed that the meticulous nature of the video evidence, which showed the robbery component of the crime—specifically the victim's pockets being turned out—played a crucial role in building the case against the accused.
