In the early morning hours of January 6, 2024, a patrol officer in Jennings, Missouri, discovered the body of Jaimarcus McDaniel lying face down in a snow-covered field. The 17-year-old Black male, who lived in East St. Louis, Illinois, was found around 4:30 a.m. near the intersection of Apricot and Emma Avenues, close to Memorial Park Cemetery. He had been shot to death.
An investigation by the St.
Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons revealed that Jaimarcus had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He was shot eight times, with injuries to his head, chest, shoulders, and limbs, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives determined that a group of individuals had driven from Illinois to pick Jaimarcus up from his home before taking him to the field in Jennings.
Using license plate recognition cameras, investigators tracked a suspect vehicle traveling from Illinois to Missouri with five people inside. Approximately 35 minutes later, the same vehicle was tracked returning to Illinois with only four occupants. Police alleged that three males from the group got out of the car with Jaimarcus, walked him into the open field, and fatally shot him. Ballistic evidence recovered from the scene was later matched to firearms associated with the suspects.
The investigation led to charges against three teenagers, all from East St. Louis. In August 2024, 17-year-old Corey Brinkley was certified to stand trial as an adult. In November 2024, Mar’Kevion Lemons, also 17, was certified as an adult. A third suspect, Cameron Cross, was also charged. All three faced counts of first-degree murder and armed criminal action and were initially held on $1 million cash-only bonds.
The case against one of the co-defendants proceeded to a murder trial, where Cameron Cross testified for the prosecution. Following the trial, a jury convicted the co-defendant, who was then sentenced by a judge to 18 years in prison. In June 2026, Cross, then 20 years old, pleaded guilty for his part in the killing. In exchange for his testimony, he received a sentence that allowed him to avoid prison time.
