In the cold of a January night in St. Louis, the life of 30-year-old Markell Byrd was cut short by gunfire. On the evening of January 8, 2024, police were summoned to the 3700 block of Kossuth Avenue, near Fairground Park, by the electronic alert of a ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system. Arriving at the scene around 10:40 p.m., officers discovered Byrd on the sidewalk, having sustained fatal injuries. Despite the immediate response, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
