On January 8, 2024, 30-year-old Markell Byrd was fatally shot near Fairground Park in St. Louis, Missouri. Authorities responded to the 3700 block of Kossuth Avenue around 10:40 p.m. after the ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system alerted them to gunfire. Upon arrival, they found Byrd lying on the sidewalk; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
