The investigation into the death of 41-year-old female Amy Lynn DeLaCruz began in the early morning hours of February 22, 2024, in Foristell, Missouri. St. Charles County police officers responded to a call regarding a shooting in the 1000 block of North Service Road at approximately 3:15 a.m. Upon arrival at a local trucking company lot, authorities discovered DeLaCruz deceased inside the cab of a 2023 Freightliner semi-truck. She had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
The scene was secured as detectives began to piece together the events that led to the violent act, initially treating the case as a homicide investigation.
As the morning progressed, law enforcement identified a suspect, 28-year-old Clyde E. Young of Godfrey, Illinois, who was the registered operator of the semi-truck where the victim was found. Young contacted dispatchers shortly before 4:40 a.m., reporting the death and admitting that he and DeLaCruz had been involved in a romantic relationship. According to police reports, Young confessed that the couple had engaged in an argument the previous night, which escalated until he retrieved a shotgun and shot her. Although he initially indicated a willingness to surrender to authorities, his behavior became erratic as he moved away from the initial crime scene.
The pursuit of the suspect culminated later that morning in West Alton, Missouri, nearly 50 miles away from where DeLaCruz was found. Young agreed to meet investigators at a Phillips 66 gas station along Highway 67 but refused to exit his vehicle upon arrival, leading to a tense standoff that shut down traffic on the nearby Lewis and Clark bridges. During negotiations, he ceased cooperating and retrieved a firearm. Shots were fired, and the standoff ended with Young sustaining a fatal gunshot wound, which preliminary investigations suggested was self-inflicted. While prosecutors had filed charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action against Young during the course of the events, the criminal case was effectively closed due to the suspect’s death at the scene.
